Since 2014 Northern Bloc have been on a mission to create, craft, and distribute the UK’s tastiest natural ice cream. For six years they’ve tweaked recipes and honed palettes, conjuring up flavour combos such as pink grapefruit and bergamot, vegan hazelnut and rose. This year Northern Bloc are on a new mission: become the first ice cream company in the country to have 100% plant based plastic free packaging.

New innovative packaging technology allowed NBoC to launch their vegan ice cream range in 100% plastic free, biodegradable paper tubs. Other “paper” tubs on the market are often lined with plastic, which, after use, are energy intensive to separate and recycle. As it stands there isn’t the facility to recycle these tubs sustainability in the UK.

This is where BioPBS comes in. Made from 100% raw plant materials, ‘compostable into biomass, carbon dioxide and water’ and food contact approved, BioPBS proves that a plastic free future in the food industry is both achievable and affordable. From 2020, Northern Bloc aim for all their stock to be distributed in paper tubs lined with BioPBS, allowing their customers to enjoy their ice cream guilt—and plastic—free.

Reducing end-user waste overnight is an impossibility, given the fact of the overwhelming figures concerning global consumption. But overnight we can make small steps towards reducing waste in our homes and communities—we’ve found both Hubbub and Zero Waste Leeds are a great start for information.

Northern Bloc are making these small steps in a world of big business.
